Capability Development & Integration

Develop what the strategy requires

I work with the responsible leaders and functions to develop strategic capabilities and address the organizational conditions that affect how they work together.

When this is useful

The work extends across functions

The business needs to develop a capability, improve its contribution to results or address dependencies between functions. Separate initiatives are under way, but their combined effect remains uncertain.

An engagement starts from the result the business needs and an assessment of the current situation. Existing analysis provides a starting point. We examine what it establishes and where further work is needed.

How we work

Define the result and work through the requirements

I work with the people responsible to specify what the capability needs to deliver for customers and the business. We assess how its processes, skills, technology and working practices contribute to that result, and where development matters most.

Through working sessions and review of the relevant material, we develop proposals for changes. We examine their implications across functions, including the resources, responsibilities and dependencies involved.

Integration

Address the conditions around the work

Developing a capability also involves examining the organization, governance, management systems, incentives, controls and mandates that affect it. Shared arrangements need to support the business as a whole, including where capabilities place competing demands on the same resources.

We distinguish responsibility for a function’s contribution from responsibility for coordinating the work across functions. The proposals make these responsibilities and their implications explicit.

Implementation

Assess what changes in practice

Where the engagement includes implementation, I work with the responsible leaders as the changes are introduced. We review what is happening, assess whether the changes are having the intended effect and adjust the work where the evidence warrants it.

The review considers how consistently results are delivered, which weaknesses matter and whether changes in one part of the business create difficulties elsewhere.

What you receive

Proposals, responsibilities and follow-up

The work produces a definition of the intended results, an assessment of development needs and agreed proposals for changes to the capability and its organizational conditions. These provide the basis for implementation, with responsibilities and a way to assess progress.

We agree the extent of my involvement, the participants and the working rhythm around the situation. The engagement may focus on one capability or on relationships between several capabilities and the business as a whole.
